datalist export to excel is not properly formatted

i have a data list with date and currency fields, when export to excel , it looks great until i try to make use of the currency column
i need to explicity and manually convert each field to a number, Secondly in excel , the data string is not recognized as a date in excel - they are both recognized as "General Format"
why is the exported data so useless out of the get go.? i need to use the data for summarization in excel as well as add total columns or so.
