Email-Based OTP Multi-Factor Authentication

One of my requirements in my project is to fit an MFA Authenticator. Unlike the MFA Authenticator that was provided by Joget that uses Google Authenticator TOTP method, I'm looking to use only the email as a means to send the OTP code. My question is, is there any ways or work around that can make this method of access possible? Any links or guide provided is greatly appreciated.
