It is depend on what hash variable and where u want to use it. For example, form hash variable is only able to use in case where an assignment object is available like assignment form & process tool; or when "id" parameter is exist in URL; or when u explicitly pass in an ID in the [] syntax of the hash variable.

So, in ur case, u mentioned about SQL JDBC query, if u mean JDBC Datalist Database Binder, you only can use the following:

• Current User Hash Variable
• Date Hash Variable  
• Environment Variable Hash Variable  
• App Message Hash Variable (Internationalisation)  
• User Hash Variable  
• Request Parameter Hash Variable  
• Request Hash Variable

if u mean the jdbc load, options, store binder in marketplace, i think u can use most of the hash variables. u can use all types if it is a form mapped to process activity.
