Using a nested hashed variable in a custom regular expression for exact match validation

When I use a nested hashed variable as a custom regular expression for default validation for an exact match it does not seem to work. However, if I use the identical nested hashed variable as a value for a text field on the same form it displays the value I am trying to exactly match just fine. I have also tried adding ?regex before both the trailing hash and the trailing curly brace. Shouldn't this work?
